Samsung Galaxy S3 (US Version) VS iPhone 4S

Today, the Samsung Galaxy 3 launched in the United States of America. The phone is designed to compete with Apple’s very popular iPhone 4/4S . However, this article will compare the Galaxy 3 to the iPhone 4S since the iPhone 4s is the most recent and contains similar parts. The specifications are as follows:

iPhone 4S (iOS 5):

CPU: A5 Processor Chip clocked at 800 Mhz

RAM: 512 MB RAM

Display: 3.5 inch(diagonal) 960 x 640 pixel Retina Display (LED Backlit)

Rear Camera: 8 Megapixel  with LED Flash-1080p Recording Capability

Front Camera: VGA 480p

Carrier connectivity: 3G Connectivity

Bluetooth: Bluetooth 4.0 compatibility

Weight: 140 grams

Samsung Galaxy S3 (Android; US Edition):

CPU: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor

RAM: 2GB RAM

Display: 4.8 inch 1280 x 720 pixel AMOLED display (LED Backlit)

Rear Camera: 8 megapixel with LED Flash-1080p recording capability

Front Camera: 1.9 MB 720p

Carrier Connectivity: 4G LTE Connectivity

Bluetooth: Bluetooth 4.0 compatibility

Weight: 133 grams

In terms of processing power, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is definitely in the lead. It harnesses a Snapdragon CPU with nearly double the clock speed of the iPhone 4S’s A5 chip. The Galaxy S3’s 2 GB of RAM outclasses the 4S’s mere 512 MB resulting in the capability of improved multitasking and more advanced applications and games. While the iPhone has the advantage of portability, the Galaxy S3’s screen proves its superiority in tasks such as: gaming, ebook reading, video viewing, and web-browsing. The rear cameras are essentially equivalent in terms of technical capabilities and Auto features. However, that is not the case when it comes to front cameras. Samsung has a slight, yet not noticeable advantage with 720p recording capabilities as opposed to 480p of the iPhone. Also, the Galaxy’s front camera can take 1.9 megapixel still shots, an enormous improvement over the 4S’s mere VGA quality. The Samsung phone has a clear advantage in carrier connectivity with 4G LTE connectivity compared to 3G connectivity of the Apple phone. 4G LTE will only expand and reach greater speeds, whereas 3G will soon be abandoned. The only real “pro” of 3G is better battery life, but that should not be an issue with the Li-Ion 2100 mAh battery of the Galaxy S3. Both phones provide the same Bluetooth 4.0 compatibility, as is the current standard. While the Samsung phone is slightly lighter, its size makes that a huge achievement. When keeping its size in mind, the iPhones does seem rather hefty. Of course, the light weight of the Galaxy does come at the cost of a plastic body in comparison to the iPhone’s glass and steel body. In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is, by a long shot, the better phone. On the other hand, it is nearly a year newer and Apple is sure to provide a more competitive product in the form of the iPhone 5 with a speculated released date of sometime in October of 2012.
