Blacklight Retribution, a free to play first person shooter game, specializes in weapon customization. Players are offered a wide array of receivers(guns), muzzles, barrels, magazines, scopes, stocks, weapon tags, and weapon camoflauge. All of these allow for variations of key weapon stats such as damage, recoil, spread, and range in accord with one’s playstyle. Receivers range from assault rifles to sub machine guns to sniper rifles and all can be customized. This leads to diverse gameplay and thoughtful weapon personalization. However, Blacklight is also plagued by a few major issues, one of them being no form of auto balance. Lack of auto balance allows for extremely uneven teams, with the only resolution being all members of one team leaving(usually the losing team).
Another obstacle to pristine gameplay is lackluster spawn protection. There are only a few spawn locations and no location is safe from spawn campers(people who stay in one spot all the time). Spawn locations only switch if enemies are standing ether directly on top of or in very close proximity to the spawn itself, but not if hostiles choose to position a decent distance away. One of the worst abuses of this spawn mechanic is Hardsuit (large mech. machine) spawn camping. The Hardsuit is one of the in game purchases available and takes team coordination and/or RPG shots to take down. It is slow and cumbersome, but compensates for this with shear damage through a minigun and a one shot kill railgun. One can pilot one of these into a position from which he can continuously rain bullets onto the opposing teams spawn. Aside from those issues, Blacklight Retribution is an excellent shooter with great graphics and a variety of interesting maps. Overall, Blacklight gets a score of 8/10.
